. I think Venter’s idea for a Mars Sample Return is excellent. It by-passes all the things that can go wrong with a sample return spacecraft (eg; Genesis) and would allow geneticists on Earth to run computer models before they try anything with organics. This is the way to study life on other planets without endangering the biosphere. Granted there are still risks from scrupulous pharmaceutical companies or military types wanting to use the DNA as part of multi-billion dollar scheme or perhaps to even weaponize it, but those kinds of things will always go on whether unique life-forms found are on Earth, Mars or wherever.
